Camper trailers – Hard floor, soft floor, rear fold, and forward fold, whatever you choose, camping in a camper trailer offers a unique blend of comfort and convenience, but it also comes with its own set of pros and cons, so here they are:
Pros:
Comfort: Camper trailers often come equipped with amenities such as beds, seating areas, kitchenettes. This offers a level of comfort that's closer to home compared to tents or swags. Sinks, hot water, stoves, fridges are in almost all models and add to comfort while camping.
Protection from the Elements: Camper trailers provide better protection from the elements than tents or swags. They offer some insulation against cold weather, shelter from rain and wind, and can provide shade during hot weather. Your beds can be left made and decreases set up time compared to tents.
Convenience: With a camper trailer, you have a dedicated space for sleeping, cooking, and relaxing, eliminating the need to set up and take down camp every day. This saves time and effort, especially on longer trips or when camping with children. You don’t have to pack the car each time you want to go camping!!!!
Storage Space: Camper trailers typically have ample storage space for camping gear, food, and other essentials. This makes it easier to organize and access your belongings compared to stuffing everything into a car or backpack. You can add a shower and toilet (some come with these inclusions) and have a perfect self-sufficient setup.
Versatility: Camper trailers come in various sizes and configurations, from compact teardrop trailers to larger family style trailers sleeping up to 10 people. This allows you to choose a model that suits your needs and preferences, whether you're camping solo, with a partner, or with small or large family or friends.
Large Families: Camper trailers can cater for very large families, you can also add additional gazebos and side domes to increase space for growing kids, they can be a very comfortable option for longer trips.
Towing: Towing a camper trailer is less difficult than towing a van, and generally can be towed to more remote places that may be difficult for bigger van’s to access.
Cons:
Cost: Camper trailers can be a significant investment, with prices ranging from a few thousand dollars for basic models, to tens of thousands of dollars or more for luxury trailers with all the bells and whistles. You can find a lot of good second-hand camper trailers online – just ensure you see it setup prior to purchase to ensure there is no significant damage or mold. Additionally, there are ongoing costs such as maintenance, insurance, and storage fees – if you do not have space in your garage.
Towing: You'll need a suitable vehicle to tow your camper trailer, some trailers are lightweight and easy to tow and store- there are many tiny model options on the market. Towing adds complexity to your travels and may require additional skills and equipment, such as a hitch, brake controller, and towing mirrors.
Off-Road Capability: Be mindful there are some on road camper vans – most are off road these days but ensure you know what you are purchasing, as this can limit your options for exploring remote or rugged terrain, especially if you prefer more adventurous off-grid camping.
Setup and Pack-Up Time: While camper trailers offer more convenience than tents or swags, they still require some setup and pack-up time. Dependant on the model – soft floors generally take greater time to set up than a hard floor. Both include additional time spent leveling the trailer, hooking up utilities (if applicable), and securing awnings or slide-outs.
Space Constraints: While camper trailers provide more space and amenities than tents or swags, they're still relatively compact compared to full-size vans.
Overall, camping in a camper trailer can be a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing comfort and convenience. However, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons and consider factors such as cost, towing capabilities, and your camping style before making a decision.
